Motorcade – Boardwalk, SBFZ through Olongapo City

Probably running on methane from hog manure, the x-number cars that joined the motorcade were out to jolt the town into awareness of the 14th Hog Farmers Convention. With the Task Force FMD mascot courtesy of Dr. Victor Atienza, Head of the NFMDTF leading the way, all roads from the Boardwalk, SBFZ led to the OCCC - via the main roads of Olongapo!

Exhibitors and Delegates Registration, OCCC

Operation Expedite Beautification was the order of the day for all exhibitors. Registration ongoing and people milling in – the excitement was in the air. With R.L. Lapid’s Chicharon and the rest of the PAMPI squad, the OCCC was festive not just in color and décor – but in aroma, as well! The mood buzzed with party and fiesta, with the overall atmosphere of handaan at kainan almost foreshadowing the serious side and landmark achievements of the event.

Of course, the 14th Hog Farmers Convention “Galing ng Pinoy! Galing ng Pinoy Pork!” was on the way to become another successful event to celebrate the NFHFi’s biggest gathering of the year.

Opening Ceremonies

With Emcee Farmer Francis L. Wong, the NFHFi Corporate Secretary and Information Officer at the helm, the Opening Ceremonies was propelling forward. Himself the puppet master behind the 14th Hog Farmers Convention, Farmer Wong introduced the two Guests of Honor, Senator Manuel A. Roxas II and Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr.

In his welcome speech during the opening ceremonies, Guest Speaker Senator Manuel A. Roxas II extolled the progressive and creative actions of the NFHFi as worthy of government programs in support of the hog industry. However, Senator Roxas also counseled the NFHFi and the hog industry to strengthen their ranks and unite against the unstoppable onslaught of globalization, and encouraged “unity and cooperative action to compete against the big companies eating into the market share.” Furthermore, he urged the industry to get rid of segments that effected unnecessary barriers to globalization, i.e. segregation of industry partners in feeds, soybean, and mills, and classification in terms of farm size. Lastly, Senator Roxas recommended that the members of the industry keep track of their trade not just with a price watch, but one that monitored the general health of the industry.

For his part, aware of the importance of this year’s convention, host City Mayor James Gordon Jr. permitted the first-ever live animal exhibit of breeder swine in Olongapo. Mayor Gordon congratulated the Federation on their successful efforts of bringing the hog industry into the city limelight, commenting that he was impressed by the breeder-barakos on display. In honor of the hog farming industry, he ended by saying that his administration will encourage backyard hog-raising as a viable livelihood. (click here to view video)

Exhibition Opens – Plenary A and B and Outdoor Exhibits

The 14th Hog Farmers Convention is the culmination of a three-month campaign by the National Federation of Hog Farmers Federation Inc. to present its new vision. Handled by Convention Chairman Johnson C. Dycaico, the Federation successfully launched the branding of Pinoy Pork as the Pork of Choice with its focus on better consumer benefits and improved standards and proficiency of pork operations. “Galing ng Pinoy! Galing ng Pinoy Pork!” has its theme on sustaining the development and modernization of the Philippine hog industry, becoming globally competitive, empowerment through strong industry foundations, and lastly, progressive interaction with integrated food manufacturers.

The 14th Hog Farmers Convention included delegates from Bulacan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Pampanga in Central Luzon, all the way up to northern Zambales. To coincide with the Convention, and as a product of the NFHFi PR campaign headed by Pinky Tobiano, Zambales Governor Vicente P. Magsaysay declared May 23 to 27 as ‘Hog Farming Week’ in the province.

Integral to the Convention theme, “Galing ng Pinoy! Galing ng Pinoy Pork!” focused on a couple of pioneer exhibits namely: the PIC Philippines Inc. live pig exhibit, the first-ever in Olongapo City, and the “kuliglig” a Philippine invention and native version of corn and rice thresher by Joe Tin proprietor of JVT Trading.

Hog Farming and Pork Processing Seminars and Trainings

“Galing ng Pinoy! Galing ng Pinoy Pork!” focused its hog farming seminars on the latest in technology-transfer, procedures on waste management, updates on the Luzon FMD campaign, as well as modern medicine and technology on breeding and animal health. Included were lectures on organic fertilizers, soybean as alternative feeds and biogas technology. A corollary facet of the convention, a livelihood series in the form of pork meat cutting and processing by Ms. Lourdes Santos Rivera and Dr. Ma. Gracia D. Flores of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), as well as healthy pork cooking, conducted by Ms. Rivera and Executive Chef and Professor Nelson Leo Roque, took center-stage. These hands-on training seminars proved to be informative as well as festive and became welcome additions that sparked the interest of a great number of participants. (click here to view video)

Pork Producers and Food Manufacturers Unite in Hog Federation Meet

The 14th Hog Farmers Convention was both monumental and memorable an occasion because it included the initial participation of the food manufacturers represented by the Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc. (PAMPI). For the first time in almost sixteen years, the NFHFi, represented by National Chairman Gabriel H. Uy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PAMPI, represented by its Executive Director Francisco J. Buencamino, wherein both parties agreed to integrate efforts to improve, unite and strengthen the nation’s food manufacturing industry. This historic event undertakes the collaboration of both parties through a broad range of strategies meant to bridge diverse approaches in matters as broad as policies on international and regional issues, and as specific such as continuing research and training and development programs in agricultural, agribusiness and rural communities.

The main purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to stabilize prices of food from livestock production through the promotion and enhancement of business cooperation between the pork producer, the NFHFi - and the food manufacturer, PAMPI. The MOU further endeavors to design and implement a pork promotion campaign to increase consumption as a means of achieving more economical levels of production, processing, marketing and distribution; establish and strengthen industry cooperation; and launch collaborative projects on improving the economics of the pork industry. For the first time, the NFHFi and PAMPI agree to establish and implement a joint Task Force that will, on its own, formulate objectives, plans and targets for the implementation of research and development programs. The initiative behind this major turning point in Philippine food industry was lauded by Department of Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap, as he bore witness to this landmark signing. Triboa Night

Triboa, nestled at a cliff’s edge in the SBFZ’s version of the United Nations’ Avenue, served as the APEC 1996 Summit’s club house. Across the elegant driveway are houses for lease at king’s ransom rates (or at least that of head of state). Highlights of the night included the raffle of two (2) TVL flat-screen TVs (won by Luz Farms). Honored during the night was Rogelio Sarmiento, NFHFi founding member, former Representative and President of Vitarich Corporation. His family accepted his plaque on his behalf. National Chairman Gabriel H. Uy initiated an open forum on the vestiges of the convention, and got passing marks albeit a few and minor comments. Entertainment was provided by Lightwall, an acoustic quartet.
